В этом посте я балансирую между английским, испанским и русским в попытке собрать небольшую Lexikоллекцию на тему баланса и равновесия (:

Ситуация №1: потеря баланса и выход из равновесия

• throw/knock/catch someone off balance (to surprise, upset, confuse someone)

• cut the ground from under someone’s feet (to spoil someone’s plans or achievements by doing something better than them or by doing it before them; to make someone or their ideas seem less impressive by having better ideas yourself or doing something before they do)
  → desconcertar a alguien; hacer perder pie; desequilibrar
  → вывести из равновесия; расстроить, ошеломить, озадачить, привести в замешательство кого-либо…; выбить почву из-под ног; сорвать планы

Ситуация №2: отсутствие баланса и неопределённость

• be/hang in the balance (be uncertain, be very likely to fail)
  → estar en juego; colgar/pender de un hilo (estar en peligro, correr gran riesgo)
  → быть в критическом положении, находиться под угрозой; висеть на волоске

Ситуация №3: отсутствие баланса + определённость = перекос / перевес сил

• tip/swing/tip/tilt the balance // tip/tilt the scales (to change or to affect the result of something; to exercise a decisive influence)
  → inclinar la balanza (inclinar el asunto en cuestión a favor de alguien o algo)
  → склонить чашу весов в сторону/в пользу…; решить исход дела; перевесить в чью-либо пользу, получить преимущество…

Ситуация №4: поиск и нахождение баланса

• strike a balance between something and something (to accept neither of two extreme positions or things but find a solution that is reasonable and fair; if you strike a balance between two things, you try to give an equal amount of attention or importance to each)
  → buscar un término medio; conciliar algo con algo
  → находить баланс, искать компромисс

• (keep something / get something back; be/remain…) on an even keel (steady; regular and well-balanced and not likely to change suddenly)
  → en equilibrio; equilibrado, estable
  → уравновешенный, устойчивый…

• redress the balance (to change a situation in order to make things fair and equal); establish the balance, adjust the balance, balance (something) up/out
  → equilibrar la balanza, establecer/conseguir un equilibrio, compensar
  → привести в равновесие, сбалансировать, уравновесить…

And some examples – just to redress the balance:

1. The question caught her off balance.
   → La pregunta la desconcertó y empezó a perder pie.
   → Вопрос привел её в полное замешательство.
2. His future in the company hanged in the balance. 
   → Su posición en la empresa pendía de un hilo.
   → Вероятность сохранения им своей должности была под большим вопросом.
3. Your letter of recommendation swung the balance in his favor. 
   → Tu carta de recomendación inclinó la balanza a su favor.
   → Ваше рекомендательное письмо сыграло решающую роль в его назначении. 
4. It isn’t always easy to strike the right balance between family and work.
   → Conciliar la vida familiar con la laboral puede resultar complicado. / A veces es difícil encontrar un equilibrio entre el trabajo y la familia.
   → Бывает непросто найти баланс между работой и личной жизнью.

Дополнения:

• равновесие сил / политическое равновесие → equilibrio de poder / de fuerzas → the balance of power
• ~в согласии → en armonía, en concordancia → in (full, perfect…) harmony
• достигать компромисса → llegar a un compromiso, llegar a un acuerdo → meet somebody halfway (to do some of the things that someone wants, in order to reach an agreement with them)
• one mans’s loss is another man’s gain (said when someone gets an advantage from someone else’s bad luck)
